Mt. Hankoyama was the site of some of the fiercest fighting during the Satsuma Rebellion (Kichiji Pass Battlefield, National Historic Site) and is a foothill of Sannodake, one of the peaks of Mt. Kinbo. The mountain offers excellent views over all of Gyokuto as well as the Ariake Sea. In May, the air is filled with the aroma of mikan orange blossoms, and visitors from October to December can enjoy a landscape filled with mikan oranges ready for picking.
