The Shimonareishi region is an idyllic area that stretches along the foot of the mountains that make up the Aso caldera. The area is also home to the Great Kawashima Cherry Tree. On the northern side of this region, you can climb the caldera and get wonderful views of the Kyushu mountain range, and to the west, you can visit the Maruyama Highlands, which offers views over Kumamoto City, the Ariake Sea, and Mt. Unzen.
